Davey Bellerose is thankful for the unique opportunity to have worked with Anna Sokolow, Ernestine Stodelle and Jim May. Although he has numerous credits in dance and acting throughout his career, he attributes his creative inspiration to what was bequeathed to him by these most influential pioneers of American modern dance. Davey has trained and performed as an actor, dancer, and musician, and it is the passion and vision of these pioneers that provided the impetus for his desire to continue their tradition. For Davey, that tradition is to evolve the art of movement in the field of the performing arts, and he has done so with his unique genre that binds together the expression of artistic ideas through the foundation of Simpatico Movement.

“I felt that Ernestine Stodelle was not only a pioneer of dance, but also an engineer of dance. She had the gift of being able to articulate the philosophy of the human body into a logic that translated into such grace and economy. It caused you to move from your bones in a way that was remarkably resonant with the space around you. The feeling of moving in that way was cathartic. I asked her one day, “What was it like to be in the studio with Doris Humphrey?” She said, “Oh, we thought we were changing the world . . . and we did.”

“I discovered instantly that Anna Sokolow had an intensity that cut into the deepest parts of the human condition. She ventured where few have the courage to go, where we must face our darkest fears and the most brutal truths about ourselves. For me, Anna’s presence in the studio voided any superfluous notions beyond the task at hand. That intensity provoked a focus on the moments behind the movement, which opened the door to a whole new way of approaching dance and acting. It wasn’t performance any more, but a pure act of possessive intimacy. Without her I would never have discovered such hallowed depths of the human heart and mind.”

Simpatico Movement offers classes in Movement for Actors, Acting for Dancers, and for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of why and how they feel and behave.
